August 2008

August 01, 2008

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/08/01/corporate-101-tighti

Believe it or not, it?s August, friends?that means it?s your last chance to pull out The Bright n? Loud Fashion before Humble n? au Natural comes back in style with the falling leaves. Think bright colors, loud glamour sizes. Orange sundress? Check. Bug-eye sunglasses? You betcha. Heavy on the hemp and necklaces? Couldn?t live without it. But what does that mean for the workplace? How far can the color rainbow go?

The answer is…tights. Not ?pantyhose?, the grey wrinkly, Yoda-looking layer of bunched elastic around your Great Auntie Aggoo?s ankles at Thanksgiving. No, my friends, we?re talking glitz and sparkle. Bright n? tight. The color spectrum that poor ol? Auntie A can?t even pick up on anymore with her triple prescription glasses. And thank god, in the workplace, tights are practically mandatory! You can always justify it was your occupational duty.

?Wear? to go: First of all, watch aptly named ?Silk Stalkings? star Rhonda Shear?s promotional video on her own brand of leg accessories:

YouTube - Watch Link

Not only does she advertise her tights are the ?smoothiest tights? (can you drink that???), but her little models around ¾ of the way in to the video sport some awesome office-appropriate fashion combos, including vests and grey babydoll dresses.

THEN, surf the web for the best colors you can find! Don?t forget the cardinal rule: horizontal stripes make everything look wider and larger (which you don?t want!!). Vertical stripes make your legs look sleek and lean.  A second rule to keep in mind: no peep toed shoes and tights. Unless you want to be subversive. Which we totally condone.

                                                       HOT:

                                                    Fashion Tights

                                                           NOT:

                                                       HT Tights

And of course, the ultimate creator of colorful tights: American Apparel. They average around $40 a pop and you can totally just check out the colors at Macy?s, but if you need some inspiration, AA will always help.

Happy Shopping!

Stella McCartneySo, I?ve always been a fan of Stella McCartney?she?s definitely mastered that effortless cool, which earned her the British Designer of the Year Award last year, and I love the way she?s always maintained that underground, slightly rock ?n roll, hip girl look in each of her collections.

Stella celebrated her Resort 2009 collection this past June in a garden party sort of fashion, debuting in NYC?s Jefferson Market Garden in the West Village. The collection is yummy!

The one time biker staple has become a wardrobe essential.

                                          Latex Leggings

Like any other style that has a shelf life for more than a year, it must evolve. Latex leggings are making a comeback after many years! These glam rock inspired leggings have been on the runway for a few months already and have recently been hitting the stores one by one. Many socialites have already been seen in these (shown above), even the poster child for leggings herself Lindsay Lohan, and now it’s your turn! You can probably manage to find anything in your closet to wear with these, but the more common way to wear them is under an oversized sweater or in place of a pair of basic tights. Shown below are leggings specifically from americanapparel.net ($42), but for more selection go to shoptuition.com or bebe.com!

I’ve been mentally searching for the perfect pair of white pants all summer and I seem to do this every year. If I have a pair, I tend to really outwear them. The right pair for me are a loose, wide leg, linen mix. They’re best paired with a colorful top, try dark orange. Add your favorite flat sandals and things start feeling light and airy.

Gap - White Pants                         AE Sailor Pant

I like the pair from Gap (on the left for $39.99) because of their casual look but a more fitted wide leg can also be scored to dress up at night. I love wide leg pants (like the AE Sailor Pants on the right on sale for $24.95 at AE.com), especially this time of the year. So, forget the rules of when and where, if you love white pants then find your pair now.

I propose a question: why, oh why are women?s handbags so expensive? I guess essentially, you are getting what you pay for, and in the long run sometimes expensive handbags are worth the investment?they carry value, literally. But come on?$300 ain?t cheap, and that?s supposed to be affordable when your comparing it to a 2,000 dollar Chloe or Balenciaga bag. I?ll never understand it and designers will probably never lower their prices, so in the meantime, I?ll put a little bit away in my ?bag fund? from time to time and feel that much more satisfied knowing that I worked hard for my little piece of arm candy.

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/08/06/travel-fashion-fashi

When traveling through cities, foreign or otherwise, it?s impossible to feel 100% safe of your surroundings and safety at all times. Such is the risk we all take when riding the subway, traveling alone, or inevitably getting lost in a new and strange location. Nobody wants to be mugged, and nobody wants to be targeted or approached when traveling. Believe it or not, what you wear makes a strong traceable expression of your personality, style, and even (potentially) how much money you carry around. The goal when ?dressing defensibly? are much the same in any fashion scenario: you want to attract attention to yourself, but not in a bad way. A few simple fashion changes can make a huge difference in how potential criminals or pickpockets perceive you as a target.

Think Like a Criminal. Next time you?re walking in a city, try this experiment.  Look around the street and ask yourself: If I were going to try to pickpocket someone, who would I choose and why? A little morbid, I know. But most likely, you might start to consider how women in their 20s and 30s, with bright colored dresses, short hemlines, and propensity to carry around cash in case of emergencies are easy and profitable targets. But don?t let me be the judge for you. Keep a do?s and don?ts list of your own, and follow your own discretion next time you?re getting dressed for a day in the city.

Protect your belongings. Sturdy bags with zippers are a must. Coach makes a simple design called the Carly Leather, available in 4 different colors. I personally like the Brass/ Tan. But in terms of functionality and simplicity, this bag has a simple exterior, strong make, and one zipper to keep track of.

                                                        Coach Carly Leather

If traveling in a train, bus, or subway, always keep your bag or backpack firmly in your two hands. Backpack on your back? Take it off and hold it in your arms until you get off the train. Suitcase on wheels? Tuck it safely between your legs, and never let go of the handle. Think of it all as leverage; though you may not be the strongest girl in the bunch, pickpockets and crooks are looking for signs of neglect or naiveté. Never plop your handbag, holding your passport, cash, credit cards, checks, cell phone, iPod, etc on to the seat next to you or on the ground.

Keep it Simple. The less layers of clothes to keep track of, the better. It?s not that you want to look uninteresting; you should be aiming to look uninteresting as a potential target. Gap is perfect for finding some basic, simple T?s, like this reversible one:

                                                           Reversable T

And a little fashion intimidation never hurts. Your clothes should make you look and feel confident, self-aware, and defensive. In terms of intimidation, footwear is a strong card to play. High-heeled shoes, especially if difficult to walk in, are probably the worst on the barometer of safety fashion for a whole slew of reasons. Sneakers are the middle-ground: not detrimental, but not exactly intimidating.  TIP: Wear boots with a solid heel. Not only do they look intimidating, but if you ever do get in to a tough situation, a sharp kick will do some serious damage. Frye boots are the best by far in the business, inspired by Western and classic English riding boot designs. Complete the look with a pair of skinny jeans and a black T-shirt, and Lara Croft herself couldn?t have done any better.

There are so many great online shoe stores out there.  One reason why a shoe fanatic might not like buying shoes online is because they are unable to try them on.  If you know you’re shoe size is always the same for particular designer or brand shopping online for shoes is a perfect, fast and convinient way to purchase your favorite shoes.  If you don’t know always know your perfect shoe size, don’t worry!  Solestruck.com is a fabulous online shoe store that offers free standard shipping & free return shipping.  That is awesome & makes life so much easier.  I personally know that they have great custumer service.  I tried on a pair of BC sandals & they didn’t fit a perfectly as I wanted.  So, I simply emailed them for a return label & dropped the shoes off at my local UPS store.  The shoes in the correct size came back a few days later!

Here are some shoes that I will most likely order as soon as possible:

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/08/08/corporate-101-snooze

The corporate world is a lethargic place. Waking up at 6:35am all four other mornings of the week, Fridays often fall prey to the snooze-button blues. I too understand this quibble. You hit the snooze-button about 5-6 times, and it always makes you feel so good because you think you?re stealing back some of what the office steals from you everyday. Of course, after hitting that snooze button 5-6 times you?re late for work, spend about 10 seconds getting dressed and eat breakfast in the car. Needless to say, those days aren?t you finest, fashion-wise. I?m not saying snooze-buttons are a bad thing, but how can we prevent hitting the snooze-button on our style? Here?s a couple easy style tips to save you minutes in the morning and still look dashing?and of course, I?ll write them all before you can say ?10 more minutes, please!?

1. Lay out your clothes the night before. Sounds like kindergarten when you forgot to wear socks for a month, right? And mom made you sleep with them on so you wouldn?t stink up your Keds? Well this is the same little social exercise, only slightly matured. Believe it or not, setting out your clothes often gives you something to look forward to in the morning?and buys a couple extra minutes with the snooze machine. What?s not to love?

2. Unique Dresses. Leave the babydolls and jersey knits for the weekend beach brigade, love. Look forward to smashin? fashion Fridays with some unique dress finds, like this Banana Republic Polka-dot Sheath Dress for $150.00 . Look for dresses with interesting cuts, necklines, and silkier fabrics. A simple choice in fabric or interesting cut will make this one-garment throw-on seem meticulously planned.

                                                           Petite polka-dot sheath dress

3. The Boots to Match. Just as dresses are a quick fashion statement, so are boots. Call me crazy, but they look far better than flip flops or your favorite pair of sheepskin moccasins. Boots can be fun and completely flexible, just remember keep them toned down in color, size, heel, and shape. Boots are an accent, not an outfit in and of themselves. My favorite:

I?m at a crossroads with how I feel about fall approaching. If only summer?s were endless. Sigh. Anyhow, I found nothing inspiring on the runways this week and instead found colorful looks from summer music festivals far more appealing than darkish, bundled up, pale models. I?ll be honest, I am one of the few people in this world that doesn?t own a pair of Levi?s. Now, it?s not that I don?t want to?I just get lazy with denim jeans sometimes and buy whatever fits or whatever is on sale. Levi?s aren?t cheap, but they?re also not expensive when compared to designer denim. I want to pick up a pair soon and think I have found my match made in heaven: the Levi?s re-issued 1970 flare jeans.

Levi?s is calling these their reissue of an ?archived? 1970?s version with a hi-rise cut and signature ?arcuate? stitching on the back pockets, they also have a little bit of stretch in them which makes for a perfect fit.

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/08/13/travel-fashion-olymp

Ah, the opening ceremony of the Olympics. What better way to gauge international fashion faux-pas than to press your magnifying glass up to the television screen to check out the labels and designers of each country?s Opening Ceremony garb. Following their lead not only on the racetrack and swimming pools, Olympians lead the way dressed with decorum and refinement?two lessons we should all learn when representing our countries in international waters. They weren?t always so respectable: the original Olympians wore nothing at all. Let it not be said, I wouldn?t mind a couple swimmers taking off those questionable speed suits and donning their birthday suit instead.

What we Can Learn from Olympians:

Top the Blazer. Yes, the dinner jacket works for men and women alike, but the look is only defined by the hat. Ralph Lauren topped his classic navy blue blazer, designed for the United States, with a white newsboy cap to complete a preppy, athletic look. The key to pulling off a refined, boarding-school look yourself is to only use solid colors. No funny patterns or pins! It?s all about sleek and elegance.

OR, you can go for the gangster, edgy look like these spy-inspired caps like the French Olympians. COMPLETE THE LOOK: Find a solid colored hat with a tilted brim. It gives much more personality to the look, like the mischievous schoolboy or damsel-who-causes-distress, rather than Sunday-school proper.

Since you may still be shocked by the comment about Olympic swimsuits, let me just say I admire them, a lot, and want to incorporate them in to my own fashion as well. Want to follow suit? Here?s a picture of what Natalie Coughlin and Michael Phelps choose to wear when they shoot for the gold. All I can say is load up on spandex, preferably all black (it?s much sleeker) and let ?er rip!

                                                 Alexander McQueen

Rumor has it that designer Alexander McQueen is about to launch a collection at a Target near you. Now you can have affordable designer like pieces hanging out of your closet. I am still having trouble adjusting to the idea, but none the less I am very excited!

McQueen has another line called McQ. Its diffusion is more affordable than his other collection, but now his clothing will be tangeable for everyone. And yes, he already does collaborations with Puma and Samsonite, but real talk- if we’re going to own McQueen, we want to see it (like I said before) hanging in our closet. We don’t need McQueen sneakers because we already have Pumas, and we don’t need expensive luggage that is just going to get dinged up anyway. We need McQueen on our bodies and we need it now!  Let’s hope that the retailer, in keeping with a designer of such caliber, gets materials worthy of his work so they are long lasting. Until then, say a prayer to make this rumor come true.

Stay tuned! I will let you know when the line launches, and it will in the near future!

Cover up those sunburnt shoulders and tone down the color palette?it?s time to get ready for the best time of the year for office fashion sensations: FALL!   What to do until the leaves start a-changin?, school bells start a-ringin?, and the season is really in full gear? We know you?re tired of those bright flower prints you?ve been wearing all summer long. So let?s get ready for fall with some transitional clothing! It sounds difficult, but really, transitioning from one fashion season to another just takes a few color and layer switches, and you?re good to go!

Top Transitional Clothing Pieces, from Summer to Fall:

The Sweater Coat.

Look for a sweater coat in a grey shade. It looks far more sophisticated than straight black, and allows for some summery-dress layering?s without feeling like you?re headed out on a night on the town, or back from a rude hangover. Also, look for lightweight cardigans, and none of those ?only cover the shoulders and chest? ones. Other than (obviously) not being very warm or functional, ?the shorties?, as I like to call them, look like they were stolen from a fifth grade tap recital.

                                                BDP GE Cardigan: $48.00 - urbanoutfitters.com

The Power Pants.

Never underestimate the power of well-fitting pants to make you look and feel great going in to a hard day of work. Treat yourself to a personally crafted fit at your local tailor, but for starters look no further than Express?s sleek designs.

Express Fit & Flare Pant: Modern Stretch: $59.50 (Buy 1, Get 50% off)

Halfway-There Jacket.

Before we jump full-steam into a cushy pile of colorful fall pea coats, let?s take a little pit stop at some of the more transitional-appropriate cover ups. Check out the wide variety of vests and short-sleeve blazers in style this season. What?s great about the vest population is that no design is exactly alike. Play around with the colors, belts, and tightness of the design.

Fashion Week is less than a month away?I?m counting down the days! It?ll be thrilling to finally get some new collections to take stock of and gain inspiration from. It?s 90 degrees here in sunny Los Angeles but I?m already dreaming of boots and sweaters. I combed through several Resort 2009 collections just to make sure none had slipped through the cracks when I stumbled across some Derek Lam creations.

And just so you know, trench coats aka ?the trench,? which DL used a lot of in his Resort styles, become terribly trendy every spring, but I like trenches all year long.

They make for a perfect layering item and give you that Audrey Hepburn a la ?Breakfast At Tiffany?s? look. Now what girl doesn?t want that, I ask?

Laundry by Design Cap Sleeve Ponte Sheath Dress

There are so many ways you can wear this dress.  If you are in Southern California where it’s still disgustingly hot, you can wear it with cute pumps (or flats if you love them).  If you are in a state that actually has seasons you can wear them with tights like the model pictured.  I think a cute trench coat in a pretty fall color would look geat with this dress as well.

As fast as the days turned too hot in the sultry summer heat, the lure for boots, tights and sweater dresses is also catching on. Here’s a simple look from Banana Republic. Marked at $130.00, the sweater is a bit out of range for young shoppers with a budget. No worries! To snag this look, I’ve found similar styles for a fraction of the price.

Twelve by Twelve sweater: $36.00

Try any of these other fabulous finds with your choice of tights or skinny jeans and boots:

Forever21 Grey sweater: $26.90

H81 (Heritage 1981) Grey sweater $22.90

   Forever21 Teal tights: $5.80

Express Black clutch: $23.70
