I love accessories just as much as the next girl, but in the last few years I?ve found that less is indeed more when it comes to gems and jewels. Although I have this sentiment when putting together an ensemble, I do know that accessories?whether you have them or not?can make or break an outfit. Signature, classic pieces are important?think of them as investments that you?ll wear over and over. But don?t get me wrong, inexpensive accessories are thrilling to find and even better when the price tag reads: $3.60

The cheap stuff is usually fashion jewelry?stuff you?d wear a few times before it starts turning your skin green, but the other jewels are worth paying a little more for, including timeless pieces, like the ones below that are sure to look fabulous with a work or date outfit. I?m personally an earrings OR necklace girl?you?ll rarely see me in both, and if I had to choose, I?d opt for a great ring and earrings and leave my neckline sexy and bare.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Bow Ring $48

Mars & Valentine Bold Vintage Glass Rose Ring $395

Kendra Scott Teardrop Earrings $108

Juicy Couture Stone Drop Earrings $62

Juicy Couture ?After Party? Crescent Pendant $128

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/03/travel-fashion-the-b

Being a guest at a wedding requires a certain refined attire?day or evening ceremonies each dictating their standards, as well as the signification of your relationship status. Stuck at the singles table doesn?t mean wearing the low cut dress to attract a dance from the dashing fellow across the way?it will only spark more rumors about why you are at the singles table in the first place. Why I felt this was vital for a travel fashion column is in the inevitability that you will be invited to a wedding outside of your comfort, age, relationship, or geographical zone. Therefore, it is best to put the most respectable foot forward, and leave the forward fashion at home.

Best Place to start looking: Lily Pulitzer

Lily Pulitzer, for all it?s pinks, frills, icons and fashion giggles, is the perfect place to search for a demure, respectable, guest-of-the-bride-or-groom dress. Inspired by prim and proper Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, this pink dress ($268) is a bit on the playful end, but works well for sunsets and breezy outdoor receptions.

                                        Blair Waldorf

But the truly successful, beige-wedding classic has to be this A-line frock ($248) in the not-so dashing color, Camel, but nevertheless an easy wear.

Just remember, the best way to wear ?Wedding Guest? is neutral, respectable, and season/location appropriate. Accessories should be calm in color, shape, and size as well. Though we all enjoy a fun outing in our funkiest fashion gear, weddings (where we are the guests) are not appropriate, they are like traveling into different countries. One must respect the different boundaries and customs. When it?s your wedding, you can set the rules, but until then?obey them, for just this one day.

Just because it isn?t my favorite fall holiday, doesn?t mean a little trip into costume attire is a sin. Take this summer?s fave makeover Blockbuster, The House Bunny: nobody wants to admit that they fantasize about being a Playboy housebunny, but everyone does. If you haven?t, maybe a little look at how you can remake the picture-perfection poster image will spark your imagination.

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/08/designer-inspired-lo

So, as a storm was raging on back East this last week, New York Fashion Week did not subside. Dozens of designers have unleashed ready-to-wear collections, but alas?they are for next spring.  September is a funny leeway in between fall and the very end of summer. White season is officially over, but yet it is too warm to don sweaters and tights.

As somewhat of a rebellious girl, it?s tough to abide by such restrictive rules with fashion, particularly when you live in a rather warm climate. So instead, I like to pick and choose favorite looks that are intended for future seasons, i.e. Spring 2009, and get ideas from those to use for Fall. Band of Outsiders presented Boy with the lovely Kirsten Dunst as their spokes model.

Paper thin sweaters and pencil skirts hang on the indie princess? slim figure, but rather than pointy toe stilettos on the feet, envision the looks below paired with some warm cognac leather boots, or a fringed scarf?an accessory that many a neck will bare this season. I can?t even imagine putting on a winter pea coat right now but slowly layering on top of light spring/summer pieces might just get me in the mood.

J. Crew stretch vintage cord skirt $68, jcrew.com

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/09/the-fashion-organize

Hello there! It?s my first time here blogging, so bare with the extra tales ? I have plenty & until you get used to my page, I feel it necessary to detail a little about me.

So, not only did I spend 8 hours trying to get all of my laundry done from this summer, but it took me twice as long to get my room back to normal!

I lived down the shore from May to August but still had to commute back home to work at my dance studio, and well, for the most of it I lived out of my car instead! I never knew what I wanted to wear or use, so I just kept it all in one place, my car. In the end, it left me so disheveled I couldn?t even find myself!

However, thankfully I am a neat person on the inside (neat ? being that yes, I?m cool, but also like to keep tidy!) so I was able to get things back into place? with the help of my iPod & occasional mirror dances to keep me motivated. )

While organizing I realized that I had so many pairs of sunglasses! I broke two over the months; 1 at a concert and 1 thanks to dragging my life all over creation. But still, I have about 8 pairs! Tangent?. I bought a few at 5 Below (they actually have cute ones and simple for just random when you don?t care) and they were each about $4. I loved it! Especially since I broke two pairs in 3 months!

And yet, how could I organize them so that I wouldn?t forget about them and that they?d be easy to store without breaking!? Eureka! SHOWER RINGS!!

                                                               Shower Rings

That?s right, those round little colorful circles shower curtains hang from! They?re perfect! I?ve had my sunglasses hanging from them for a few weeks now and it?s so convenient! They?re cheap to buy, and actually really durable!

How can you do it too??

1.   Buy a couple sets of shower rings. Approx. $1-$4, depending on what make and where you buy them from.

*You can find them at places like the Dollar Tree, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, etc. Basically, anywhere will have them. I bought mine at Walgreen?s (last 2 sets on the shelf) since it was late and I had been running crazy all day, I just wanted to get it over with. Definitely make sure they hook closed and aren?t open at one area. You want them as secure as possible, so your things won?t fall!

2. Link as many rings together as you like.

*Depending on where you are going to put the chain of rings AND what you put on them, will determine how many you want. I used the 12 in the box as one chain, and made another chain with the second box. (you can find them without magnets, Staples guaranteed)

3. Then, find a place you think would be best to hang the chain.

*You want to make sure it?s accessible and un-damageable. I took a Chip Clip I had at home that had a hole in the top and clipped it to the top ring, then I put a nail in my wall by my closet and hooked the clip on the nail. That way I could be sure it wasn?t going anywhere.

4. Lastly, start hanging what you want on it!

*On my first chain I hung my sunglasses, and on my second chain I hung some small wallet/clutches with arm bands on it. I used to keep my bags in a box, but I hated having to get the box out when I wanted the same purse again! This way, it?s always reachable!

Well, that?s enough about the shower rings! I?m off to go buy some silk bags for my next project!! I?ll let you in on my inspiration, but until then, happy ring linking! )

Hooded Leather JacketWhile shopping a few weeks ago, a sweet sales gal at Bloomingdale?s gave me a tip?she turned me onto Aqua, an affordable line of clothes that is exclusive to Bloomingdale?s, and is designed similar to many of the styles you see in the Marc by Marc, Joie, and Juicy collections that are featured at Bloomie?s.Not knock-offs, but items that are just as cute but with a more forgiving price tag.

I?ll admit?there were some great pieces to choose from like this Hooded Leather Jacket. Hooded leather jackets are so?cool. They?re totally rock n? roll without being too biker.

A huge trend that surfaced last Fall/Winter amongst the kids and hipsters was the hoodie sweatshirt underneath the leather jacket?something punk rockers had already been doing for ages. I say skip all the trouble and treat yourself to this cool leather hoodie?it would look fantastic over a drapey shift dress or something with sequins.

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/10/travel-fashion-all-w

There?s nothing like falling asleep to the rumbling of a storm?but waking up to one, (especially when you?ve been too caught up in planning a job interview/career switch-a-roo/shopping spree/wedding to check the weather channel) is a nightmare. While I might not be able to give sound advice on the superstitions of white gowns and drenched boutonnieres, I will tell you one thing: plodding around in sweatpants and Grannie?s gardening clogs is not the answer. If you can?t change the weather, change what you wear!

Obviously, waterproof is key. For when first-impressions and poise really matter, wear your finest and cover up with some heavy duty protection, like the LL Bean H20FF DX Trench Coat:

Don?t forget to pair it with a pair of heavy duty, up to the knee rain boots and a large umbrella?you can always switch to the heels when you get on location, without soaking your dainty pumps in the muck and soiling your stockings before you get there.

Have something to look forward to. Rainy days, unbelievably, always seem to get people all depressed, and moody?why? Maybe if we all had a little fashion item that was only appropriate for unfair-weather conditions (for me, it?s totally my pair of polkadot wellies)….

                                                                  Polka Dot Boots

…getting out the door wouldn?t be such a drag. This one of a kind, kick-ass Bloomingdale?s raincoat will never feel like you?re wearing a trash bag. The tailored fit with slightly ballooned skirt and high neck are chic, and keep you dry too!

Last but not least? An umbrella that is large enough to fit you and at least three shopping bags (or a friend, you pick) and will not break under heavy wind pressure is a MUST, repeat, MUST. While I?m usually in favor of function over form for this particular item, I was drawn to this fascinating piece of ingenuity, the Southern Plus Pink Ribbon umbrella. When the umbrella starts to get wet, the iconic pink ribbon appears on one of the panels!

What a way to stand out, and stand up for a great cause at the same time!

We all want to look good and our friends should be our best critics. If your friends won’t tell you the truth, who will? Smarter.com launched their new Facebook application called “What Would You Buy?This application can be used to create polls to ask your friends for online shopping advice. http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/11/the-fashion-organize

As promised, I will now let you in on my cute and easy way to organize jewelry (or other things you use) with silk bags!

I got the idea when my grandmother gave me just about every belt and scarf she owned from the 80?s and 90?s? maybe even the 70?s. And when I brought them to my house I just stared around, ?where the heck will this stuff go!?? I already had all my things from before I moved out that I had to move back in, and now I had an extra 20 belts, and 40 scarves!!

Luckily, I used to make jewelry and would give them as gifts to people. Instead of wrapping them (because bracelets and things like that are awkward without boxes) I purchased some pretty silk, sheer, Organza bags (that are generally used for wedding favors) and would give the jewelry away in those. They?re so cute, simple, and cheap? it?s the right way to go!

And yet, there?s still more ways to use them! I figured out that I could hang them (on shower curtain hooks this time) and display my chain belts inside of my closet on the bar to my shoe rack and on the nails in my wall in the corner by my sunglass display!

I bought some of the sheer Organza bags in silver-grey, red, green, and white. They?re really dainty, and add a somewhat sultry feel to my room. They even sell them with some beading hanging decoratively at the bottom, which adds an even nicer touch.

You can find these bags at any craft store, such as A.C. Moore or Michael?s, and I would even recommending looking at a dollar store or wedding favor website such as www.myweddingreceptionideas.com

So, before you just stuff any belts away in a drawer that seem not worthy of your belt rack, figure out where you could afford to spice up an area in your room and splurge on some $2 bags? they might just hold up the status of your room, just as good ? if better ? like the belts do holding up your pants! :)

Actually, that reminds me? I still have 40+ scarves to hang? WHAT EVER SHALL I DO!?!? Hmmm… Ahhhhh? I think next week will bring great organizing for you!

Ankle boots are in for fall so, if you don’t already have a pair, these basic and sleek black boots are the perfect first pair for the season.  First and foremost, they are on sale for an affordable price.  Second, the 3” heel makes them a little sexy and they actually look pretty comfortable.  They also come in dark brown leather, black suede and dark brown suede.

The film Coco Avant Chanel is scheduled to be released sometime this year according to IMDB.com.

Coco Chanel, the name, the myth, the legend: how much of her style do we take for granted today? For one, her boyish bob and empowering, classic, and chic style is a winning combo, just not a completely lasting one: here?s how you can flirt with Coco?s famous look, without having to become too invested. Most of them are basics, anyway, with a few key accessories.

1. The Button Down: I recommend shopping in the men?s section: they?re bigger cut around the shoulders creates more of the ?slouchy? look that Chanel is known for?women?s button-downs cut too close to the chest. Check out Express for some nice men?s shirts.

2. The Slouchy Tie: Express Men?s section is a goldmine for Coco impersonators: they sell a fabulous satin tie.

3. The Classic Blazer: everyone should have a black button blazer in their closet. It?s very pre-professional, but it?s necessary.

4. And now, the exciting part: The accessories!!! The pearl necklace is a must:

If you’re up for taking a little fashion risk, feather hairpins are fun to experiment with:

And if you really want to make the transformation complete, invest in a 1920?s vintage flapper hat. They?re gorgeous, if a little musty.

Italian designed Malo is the opposite of bad this year. In fact, the collection was very, very good. Dark pewter and gunmetal jewels were infused in the collection?s cream, white and gray color palette. To the left are my two favorite looks.

I noticed inspiration taken from long, v-neck, button down sweaters?or as I like to call ?grandpa? sweaters, I found a couple at Uniqlo in NYC last fall and absolutely love them still. Just checked out a Barneys Co Op for the first time so I?m kind of hooked, the cotton tunic below is made from recycled cotton! A number of things can come to mind when dealing with plaid. I think of old punk rock outfits, school uniforms and stylish English girls.

The lovely pick to the left seems to fall into the latter category, and as fate would have it, is named after the second largest city in Scotland?which is near England?both of which are in the UK! This plaid chiffon blouse is from the DVF Fall 2008 collection and was seen on the runway last year.

Chiffon is delicate though and must be worn with care, or else?snag city. I envision this blouse with super tight skinny pants, knee-high riding boots, and a tiny little black vest to top off.

Diane Von Furstenburg ?Glasgow? Blouse $225

http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion/2008/09/17/these-boots-were-mad

My mother used to tell me the only proper shoes for traveling were Adidas sneakers, and for the longest time I believed her. Those of us with unsteady arches are familiar with the pains that accompany a day of walking in heels or flimsy flip flops, even if it?s just around the office or boardwalk. The problem is, so many of the fashionable shoes of our time are not made to properly support the arch and roll of the foot, so after thousands of steps (which is quite feasible in a day of touring a museum or even bar-hopping) our feet are screaming for relief. To find well-made, supportive shoes ready for serious walking require a trip to a totally different type of store: usually, the hiking or heavy-duty mountaineering departments. It may sound strange, but these designers have started to develop shoes with the same support of a hiking shoe, but lighter materials and a more fashionable look. Give them a try, and your feet will thank you for it:

Some Favorites:

The Merrell Zodiac: fun, flirty, and lightweight, with a good grip and the sturdy Merrell hiking tradition to hang your hat on ($80).

The Athleta Siren: a funky take on the sneaker: not your ordinary lace-up ($80).

The Chaco Women?s Intersect Sandal: A little bit more of an investment than your normal kick-around sandals, but they?re totally worth it ($30).

Boy, have I got something you?ll ?scarf? up in a second!

While perusing through Kmart, I stumbled across a pretty nifty hanger made specifically for scarves! Now, you all read last week about how my grandmother just gave her life of scarves to me and I had no place to put them? well, guess what!? Now I do!

                                                   Scarf Organizer

The main hanger which looks like the one I found above, but in white, is called a Hijab Organizer. That one has a ton of holes, which is perfect for me! But some of you may not need that many, so finding ones that have just a few holes would be just as useful (Like the one below).

It?s pretty cheap too. I found mine for around $6.

If you go to Organizeit.com you will find a scarf hanger for $7.99+sh. Read the customer reviews too! MissS wrote, “Bought this with the matching belt hanger. So nice to be able to SEE my scarfs versus their old home, the bottom drawer! The wood is very rich looking. Highly recommend!”

There ya have it! Organization made for convenience! Who wants to have to scrounge through a huge drawer to see millions of colors and not be able to find what you want!? Not I! ?and neither should you!

For all those guys out there reading too, this sort of thing is great for ties! Loop each tie through a hole and you can see each one individually. No more tie drawer or hassle of folding! Plus, I know there are more complicated tie organizers out there (and most likely more expensive ones), but how can you beat $7? You don?t always have to get what you pay for expensively!

LOOK! They even used a ring idea to organize? who wants to go get some more inexpensive shower rings and create a new organizing eye-dazzler?? I?m so there!

Until next time ~
